Pirates seize control of cargo ship near Somalia, say owners

Pirates have seized a bulk carrier flagged under Bangladesh off the coast of Somalia and have taken its 23-member crew hostage, according to the vessel’s owners.

The MV Abdullah was en route from Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, to the United Arab Emirates carrying a cargo of 55,000 tonnes of coal when it came under attack on Tuesday, as reported by Kabir Steel Re-Rolling Mills, the company owning the ship.

“The ship was hijacked by a group of 15-20 Somali pirates,” stated Meherul Karim, the chief executive officer of Kabir Steel Re-Rolling Mills.

The maritime security firm Ambrey has confirmed that a group of armed individuals has assumed control of the vessel.
