Al-shabaab attacks Police post and telecom mast in Kenya

Mogadishu-KNN-Armed militants of Al-shabaab have attacked a police station and telecommunication mast in Madera County of Kenya’s north-eastern region about 10:00 pm on Friday, reports.

Resident told the local media that the attack was targeted to Olla village in Medera County and the police station and telecom mast owned by Safaricom were destroyed. Olla is at the Center of Mandera Moyale Road, Kenya.

Nairobi based Newspaper, Daily Nation twitted that the police has thwarted an attack on a police post by suspected Al-Shabaab terrorists in Mandera County.

No one was injured during the 10pm incident, officials said. Onesmus Kathya, Mandera County commissioner, said the attackers targeted a telecommunication mast but when they failed to bring it down they stormed Olla Police Post.

“There was heavy exchange of fire and a water bowser which was parked at the police post was destroyed,” the commissioner said.

Mandera has borne the brunt of Al-Shabaab militants due to its proximity to Somalia where the militants carry out attacks before escaping back.

A number of security personnel have died as a result of the attacks, some of which included improvised explosive devices placed on roadsides by Al-Shabaab militants.

The group carries out frequent attacks in neighbouring Kenya, which sent thousands of its troops into Somalia to fight al-Shabab.

Al-shabaab increased the attacks in Kenya this month. Last Sunday the insurgent group stormed US, Kenyan military base in Lamu and killed at least three US soldiers. A day after, on Monday the Al-Qaidda linked group has also attacked Kenyan military base in Kulbiyow, Somalia.
