Mogadishu-KNN-The international community issued joint statement of welcoming the normalizing of diplomatic relations between Somalia and Kenya. Partners described the move taken by the two countries as “mutually beneficial”.
In the statement, the partners also described the rapprochement as a “significant step” in strengthening the good ties between the two countries and positive impact of security and development in the region.
“We commend the personal efforts of Farmajo and Uhuru and measures agreed at a meeting held in Nairobi on 14 November to improve relations between Kenya and Somalia,” the statement said.
The partners – AMISOM, Denmark, Egypt, Ethiopia, EU, Finland, France, Germany, IGAD, Italy, OIC, Sweden, Turkey, Uganda, UK, UNSOM and the U.S. look forward to change into tangible the measured declared by two Presidents on Thursday.
“We look forward to the implementation of the measures agreed by the two Heads of State to deepen the ties between Kenya and Somalia” the partners said.
After months of diplomatic tension, Kenya and Somalia agreed to restore diplomatic relations that had deteriorated over the disputed ownership of an Indian Ocean territory thought to be rich in hydrocarbons.
Somalia in 2014 sought arbitration from the UN’s International Court of Justice [ICJ] and Kenya seeks an out-of-court settlement.
