Jubbaland security minister arrested in Mogadishu

Mogadishu-KNN-The security minister of Jubbaland regional state of Somalia, Abdirashid Janan, was detained by security agencies in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, on Saturday while on a flight to the Ethiopian capital, Ethiopia.

Janan is wanted by Interpol for “crimes committed” against the people of the southwestern Somali region of Gedo and neighbouring regions.

Officials in Kismayo said Janan was in Luq for the past two days before the news of his arrest in the capital broke out.

The arrest follows tense relations between the federal government and Jubbaland state due to the disputed regional presidential elections which Ahmed Mohamed Islam aka Ahmed Madobe controversially won on 22nd August.

Somali aviation authorities also ordered all international and local flights mainly from the neighbouring countries to stop at Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport for clearance before they continue their journey to Kismayo.

Hundreds of Jubbaand residents yesterday came out in the main streets of Kismayo to protest against the decision of the Federal Government of Somalia.

Meanwhile, Jubbaland regional state yesterday reacted to the actions of the federal government against the region, and vowed that flight restrictions will not affect the state.
