At least 30 Al-Shabaab militants were killed Tuesday when Somali military clashed with Al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabaab fighters in central Somalia of the Hiiraan province.
Fighters armed with heavy machine guns, rocket propelled grenades and small arms were ambushed by Somali armed forces around Mahas district, a military sources told Radio Kulmiye in Mogadishu on Tuesday.
It said dozens of heavily-armed militants were killed in the ambush, as army recovered a significant amount of military items from militants, sources said.
In a statement aired by Radio Muqdisho, government’s mouthpiece said government soldiers killed 30 fighters and seized some vehicles.
No word from Al-Shabaab on these claims.
Al-Qaida-linked al-Shabaab group is attempting to overthrow the government and install a strict form of Islamic law throughout Somalia.
