Mogadishu-KNN-Somalia’s President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed on Saturday signed into law an anti-corruption bill aimed at ridding the Horn of African country of graft.
“The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, has today signed into law the Anti-Corruption Commissions Establishment Act that paves way for the formation of Federal and State levels Anti-corruption bodies at the State House, Villa Somalia,” the presidency said.
The Somali government hopes the new law can help tackle corruption in the country clawing working to rise from years of war and economic downfalls.
Somalia is ranked by Transparency International as the most corrupt country worldwide, performing worse that Yemen, South Sudan and Syria.
The country has faced years of war, perpetrated by Islamist militant group al-Shabaab. The violence has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions others.
The Somali government is however confident of defeating the militants and restoring lasting peace in the country.
With the new law, it hopes to take advantage of the improving environment to block the graft pipes, especially within government ranks.
