Somalia: UAE condemns Somalia over seizing $9.6 million

Mogadishu-KNN-The United Arab Emirates expressed its condemnation of $9.6 million seized by Somali authorities on Sunday, 8 April at Mogadishu international airport.

The foreign ministry said in a statement that Somalia violates international diplomatic norms and seized funds intended to support the Somali army and trainees.

A plane registered in UAE Was carrying the money and 47 Emarat troops that was delayed several hours, according to the statement.

Somalia’s internal security ministry confirmed the seizure of money and said it was in unmarked bags and it is under investigation.

The ministry of foreign affairs said that the move contradicts and violates memorandum of understanding between the countries signed on November 2014.

“The United Arab Emirates deplores this violation of international law and norms, while the UAE has provided all kinds of political, economic, military and humanitarian support in the darkest conditions to consolidate security and stability in Federal Republic of Somalia” the ministry saidin a statement.

The money is under investigation, according Somalia’s security officials.
